It’s our honor and tradition to reward excellent student athletes by inducting them into our hall of fame. To nominate an athlete for the hall of fame, use the nomination form.

Requirements

Article VI – Criteria for Selection

  1. Former Highland High School athletes who have distinguished themselves by outstanding accomplishments, performances and/or honors.
  1. Former Highland High School coaches or athletic directors who have distinguished themselves by outstand accomplishments, performances, and/or honors.
  1. Former Sparta, Marengo or Chesterville high school athletes, coaches, administrators or contributors to the success of those athletic programs.
  1. Former athletes must be out of high school for at least 10 years to be eligible. Former coaches or administrators must have been removed from Highland High School athletics for at least five (5) years to be considered for induction.
  1. Individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Highland High School athletics may be nominated in the ‘meritorious service’ category.
  1. All nominees must have demonstrated good sportsmanship and citizenship.
  1. Teams which have made outstanding accomplishments may also be considered for induction.
  1. Consideration should be given to those who have further distinguished themselves after graduating from Highland High School, be it athletically at the college or professional level, or in their chosen field of endeavor.
  1. The Hall of Fame Selection Committee may choose to select teams for induction into the Highland Local School District Hall of Fame. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, teams must somehow have distinguished themselves above and beyond the normal standards.

These may include: undefeated seasons, league championships, district championships, regional championships and state tournament appearances and/or championships. The Hall of Fame Committee shall select not more than one team in any year and may choose not to select any team.

The Method of Selection

1. Nomination Forms will be made available to the general public through a method of advertising their availability. Nominations also may be made by committee members. The formal nominations may be made by any person wishing to do so. A written resume of the candidate’s credentials and achievements must accompany the nomination. Nomination Forms are due no later than September 30th for consideration on that years Ballot.

2. All nominations will be reviewed and discussed by the committee.

3. The committee will investigate the validity of the nominations to the best of its ability.

4. There may be up to three categories on the ballot: Highland athletes, Marengo, Sparta and Chesterville athletes and a coach/contributors list pending approved applications by the Committee.

5. Ballots

A. At the October* meeting the Committee will vote on each nomination form to validate completion and qualification. A nominee will be placed on the ballot by receiving a majority vote of the Committee.

B. At the January* meeting the Committee will then vote using that ballot, to elect members into the Highland Athletic Hall of Fame.

i. Absentee ballots of the Committee members will be accepted, if in the hands of the Chairman prior to the January meeting.

C. The committee will vote via secret ballot. Committee members will have either:

i. 3 votes in cases of 5 or fewer nominations.

ii. OR in cases where six (6) or more nominations: each Committee member will have votes equal to 2/3 of the nominees. (i.e. 6 nominees = 4 votes) {If not equal the votes will round up. i.e. 7 nominees = 4.6 rounded to 5 votes}.

D. To be selected to the Highland Athletic Hall of Fame, a nominee must receive at least 7 votes.

E. Individuals or teams that earn at least 5 (five) votes, but did not achieve selection, will remain on the ballot the following year. Those receiving less may resubmit a Nomination Form for consideration on a future ballot.

Constitution

Article I – Name

The name of this organization shall be the Highland Local School District Athletic Hall of Fame, which includes former district high schools in Chesterville, Marengo and Sparta.

Article II – Purpose

The purpose of this organization shall be to foster the athletic programs of Highland High School by properly honoring and recognizing those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the overall athletic program, and those who did likewise at the three previous schools in the district.

Article III – Selection Committee

Section 1 – Makeup

The Hall of Fame selection committee hereafter referred to as the committee will be made up of eleven (11) members. Those shall be: One member of the Highland Local Schools Board of Education or their designee, the High School Athletic Director and nine (9) at-large members.

Section 2 – Qualifications

The nine (9) at-large ‘charter’ committee members were selected based on
recommendations, their knowledge of Highland High School Athletics and/or athletics at Sparta, Marengo, and Chesterville high schools, which preceded the present school district. They also were chosen through a desire to have representatives of various Highland High School graduating classes represented.

Section 3 – Terms

Committee members shall serve indefinitely; severing their ties with the committee by resigning, or by missing two meetings in a school year. Replacements will be considered on the qualifications listed above and by receiving the majority of the vote of the committee.

Section 4 – Officers

The following officers shall be elected by the organization: Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. Nominations for officers shall be made from the floor by members during the October meeting. The transition to new officers shall be no later than December 31st each year.

Section 5 – Vacancies

A seat may be declared vacant if a committee member misses two (2) meetings unexcused or without communicating their absence to an officer. The position shall be filled according to Article III – Section 3 at the next scheduled meeting.

Section 6 – Removal

A member of the committee may be removed by a vote of at least eight (8) members.

Article IV – Advisory Committee

All head coaches at the high school level will be appointed as ex-officio members of the Advisory Committee for their information and resources but in no official capacity as a committee member. However, if an ex-officio member should be designated to serve on the committee of (Eleven (11)), that member would have a voting right. The Athletic Director will interview coaches at seasons end to determine potential Hall of Fame Candidates. Statistical Data can be gathered and stored at this time. Additionally, all members of the Hall of fame who have been duly enshrined shall become members of the Advisory Committee. They are invited to attend all meetings and take part in all discussions. They will not have voting privileges.

Article V – Management

Section 1 – Meetings

Regular meetings will be held in October, January, April and July*. The meeting dates will be set at the previous meeting. Special meetings may be called by the chairman or by writing to the chairman by five (5) committee members.

Section 2 – Chronological

The purpose of the meetings shall be: October*, election of officers and screening of nominations and preliminary discussions on enshrinement banquet. January*, voting for enshrines and making initial plans for enshrinement banquet. April*, announce inductees and continue plans for enshrinement banquet, July*, final plans in place for honoring enshrines, adding statistical data to the records as provided by the Athletic
Director.

* The Committee holds the right to schedule an enshrinement banquet yearly but not less than bi-yearly.

Section 3 – Confidentiality

The nature of information makes it mandatory that members are to be aware that all meetings are confidential.

Section 4 – Protocol

Roberts Rules of Order prevail at all meetings. Motions and seconds shall be made verbally with voting via voice. All voting on inductees shall be by secret ballot.

Section 5 – Quorom

At least seven committee members must be present for any voting action.

Article VIII – Awards

Each inductee will receive an award commemorating his or her enshrinements.

Article IX – Commemoratives

An appropriate means of public display of the Highland High School Athletic Hall of Fame shall be maintained within the high school at the discretion of school administration.

Article X – Enshrinement

A weekend during the football or basketball season which includes a home game shall be selected to conduct enshrinement ceremonies. An enshrinement banquet shall be held prior to the scheduled game. The inductees shall be introduced to the public at said game.

Article XI – Records

Accurate records of all nominees, all inductees, all selection-committee members and other pertinent information shall be kept by the committee chairman or his designee.

Article XII – Amendment Procedure

Amendments to this constitution must be approved by two-thirds majority vote of committee members.
